Travel & Immunization Clinic of Mississippi
Travel and Immunization Clinic of Mississippi
Overseas travel is one of the most educational and exciting adventures available to us. Meeting people from other cultures promotes peace , tolerance and understanding in our world.Going to other parts of the world , however, may expose us to different infectious disease risks —either not seen in our country or to an increased frequency of diseases seen in our country but at a very low frequency.
Dr. Smith began a Travel Medicine practice in Kansas City in 1985. He built one of the largest travel clinics in the Midwest with Hallmark, Black and Veatch, and Sprint as well as the Nazarene Church as major clients. The Travel and Immunization Clinic is the only full time travel medicine facility in the state of Mississippi. It is a designated yellow fever center and offers a full range of all needed travel vaccines as well as complete up to date printouts from the Centers of Disease Control and the World Health Organization. We are a member of the International Society of Travel Medicine and
are listed in their guide to Travel Clinics. We are an Active partner with Shoreland Medical
and utilize their Travax Travel Medicine Service. This is the most up to date and
complete Travel Medicine service and integrates all current information from WHO,
CDC.Primary users of our travel service in addition to individuals are churches(misssionary work), businesses doing overseas work, governmental and political bodies and educational entities.
The Center works with both organizations and individuals to provide the most current advice for international travelers. We plan immunization schedules and travel advice and mediciations based on specific itineraries and the exact nature of the trip-recreational, work etc.
CLINIC FEES–The majority of overseas travel immunizations are not covered by
the usual health insurance policies. Some of your immunizations such as Hepatitis
shots may be covered depending on the policy. We do not participate in any
health insurance plans and payment is due at the time of the delivery of service.
Acceptable methods of payment include cash, major credit cards and debit cards.
Checks are not acceptable. We are glad to give you a summary of our services
rendered so that you can turn into your insurance carrier. Many times their reimbursement
is less than our costs of delivering the shot. The earlier you can contact us the better so that we can
make sure we can get in all of your shots before the scheduled trip. If you have a
prescription drug plan –this should cover a significant percentage of the costs of the
drugs
prescribed for your trip.
FEE SCHEDULES —AS OF JANUARY —2011.THESE ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE
AT ANY TIME .OUR CONSULT FEES HAVE NOT CHANGED SINCE 2006.THE ONLY
INCREASE IN OUR CHARGES ARE VACCINE COSTS. VACCINE COSTS ARE
INCREASING AT APPROXIMATELY 5-10% PER YEAR. WE WORK HARD TO
FIND THE BEST PRICES BUT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DIFFERENT SUPPLIERS
IS MINIMAL. MANY TIMES THERE IS ONLY A SINGLE MANUFACTURER FOR
A VACCINE.MOST NEWER ADULT VACCINES POST 2000 ARE PRICED BETWEEN
80 AND 200 DOLLARS PER VACCINE.TRAVEL VACCINES SUCH AS YELLOW FEVER,
TYPHOID, AND JAPANESE ENCEPHALITIS ARE PRODUCED IN MUCH SMALLER
QUANTITIES AND ARE NOT SUBJECT TO THE NORMAL BIDDING AND COST
CONTROL MEASURES.WE ARE NOT A “SHOT CLINIC’” AND DO NOT DISCUSS SPECIFIC
PRICING ISSUES OVER THE PHONE. THE NURSE WILL MAKE YOU AN APPOINTMENT
FOR YOUR TRAVEL CONSULTATION AND GIVE YOU DIRECTIONS TO OUR CLINIC
PLEASE SEE THE FOLLOWING FOR A GENERAL GUIDE TO PRICING.
The Travel Consultation takes approximately 30 minutes and addresses current mediciation, allergies and a brief medical history–most pertinent to travel.Much information is exchanged and given on the ways to stay safe and disease free in a foreign land.A large amount of pertinent
material regarding the destination ond the risks is provided in an individualized
printout tot he traveler. The nurse travel consult charge is 35.00–whether you
choosie to obtain the vaccines or not.Vaccines are approached from a recommended, required, and routine viewpoint. All routine vaccines are generally reimbursable by your
Helath insurance—often not fully reimbursed realative to our charges. We do not file insurance for
insurance for you and do not gurantee the level of reimbursement for
potentially covered vaccines.
The total cost of an initial Travel Consult varies with the destination, length of stay,
conditions under which the traveler is staying, activities of the traveler in country
and whether all routine vaccines are up to date. The general cost of the consult plus
vaccines in most often in the range of 400-800.00.It is greatly depended on the factors listed above and is almost entirely driven by vaccine costs. A seasoned foreign traveler
who does not need a consult –may be able to waive the consult and only get the 1 or
2 vaccines necessary for travel.
Below are the most common vaccine groups and they are broken into the three Rs.
1.Routine Vaccines—Polio,DPT,MMR,Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B
2.Required Yellow Fever—-190.00
3.Recommended- Typhoid—115.00
Our service is an indepth, reviewed , guided and directed by a Board Certified
Infectious Disease Individual .
If price is your number 1 concern and your time is not important —We recommend th
the Health Department at the Jackson Medical Mall-it is government supported for rent and salaries..the following should be understood.
1.There is no physician direction of the clinic
2.You may have to wait for several hours.
3.As the Mall is in a high crime area–I do not recommend that Women go
to the Mall clinic unescorted.
4.Mace or a Small Caliber Weapon on your person is not a bad idea.
5.No extensive handouts are given
6.No prescriptions are given
7.No during trip or post trip consultations are available.
